Maldives Whale Shark Research

Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme (MWSRP) is an organization located in the Maldives that bases their research on whale sharks and provides education to anyone seeking it while engaging with local communities, exchanging knowledge and providing educational experiences for the next generation.

The data collected by MWSRP, in addition to encounter data submitted by citizen scientists contribute to MWSRP’s regional online database The Big Fish Network. Here they can view every shark in the database and details about their recent sightings as well as submit their encounters. Letting people contribute to research is valuable, more data is collected which means more research can be conducted.

People won’t protect what they don’t know about, educating as many people as possible in the home areas where whale sharks, and other mega fauna can be found is incredibly important and vital.

The work, research and education shared by MWSRP is a great example of what can happen when people from all walks of life come together.
