Ocean Wise

A mini photojournalism project supported by Ocean Wise. My project was based around salmon and the great lengths and obstacles they face to get to their spawning grounds, along with the many challenges juvenile salmon face.

I decided to learn more about, and execute some fresh water testing. I picked a location I new the salmon run, the Kitsucksus Creek a vital location which leads into the Somass River then leading right into the Alberni Inlet. The Kitsucksus Creek is located on the traditional and unceeded Territory of the Hupačasath First Nation. Fresh water is such an important part in a salmons life, I felt it appropriate to carry out some testing.

The testing included taking samples of the following: water temperature, conductivity, dissolved oxygen, chlorine, pH, alkalinity, hardness and depth. Once taken I entered all data into a public platform called Water Rangers here all the information I collected will be stored for future people to look at. I also submitted all data to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District.
